The Chain Breaker
If you commit yourself to sin that sin will make you
its slave.
its slave.
Jesus: John 8:34
In John 8, Jesus is speaking with some folks who were apparently people who were believers; as the discussion continued, Jesus began speaking about His teachings. He told them if they held to His teachings, then they would know "the truth and the truth will make you free." (John 8:32) Now, I would have thought this would have made these folks very happy. Instead they became angry and began to argue with Jesus. They told Him that they were children of Abraham, and they also said they had never been slaves to anyone. REALLY? Did they forget the Roman boot on their neck? Did they forget the four hundred years they, the Israelis, were enslaved to Pharaoh in Egypt? Did they forget their seventy years of being in exile and slavery to the Nebuchadnezzar or the Medes and Persians? Sure they had been enslaved.
So what is going on with them? Sadly, like a segment of our population today, they had become so use to being enslaved, it was hard for them to think of themselves any differently from their abnormal normal slave's life. They were slaves alright, but like a frog boiling alive in ever increasing heated water, they couldn't sense or feel how sin blinded them to their dangerous state of being. They were swimming in their life pool that, for them, felt okay. And they even became angry at Jesus who was trying to give them salvation and freedom. Today, such people angrily label purveyors of God's salvation chain breaking message with all kinds of derogatory names. I am sure you have heard about them. Names such as homophobes, bigots, haters, judgmental and unjust hypocrites are only a few of the libelous labels they hurl at people whom they cannot hear.
Jesus continued speaking authoritatively to them about the most horrible of enslavements. The enslavement to sin. I know in our day that many cannot conceive of something like sin enslaving us. Yet, it is very true. Commit yourself to alcoholic drink or drugs and I guarantee you they will enslave you. Commit yourself to stretching the truth, and watch how difficult it is to overcome the inability of knowing to whom you told one story/lie. So, you make up another. Commit yourself to what the Bible describes as sexual immorality. Listen to people tell you they cannot stop being pornagraphers once they connected themselves with this "secret sin." Continually the courts arrest pedophiles, and I have heard from judges and other "experts" how they cannot change. They are enslaved. Homsexuals proclaim they cannot change, though thousands have flock to http://www.brothersroad.org/ , and other organizations, for help and receive it. People become enslaved to food, as was I. The Bible calls this gluttony. Get in the habit of telling people what you think they want to hear, and watch how hard it is to be a person of authentic integrity. Your word will mean nothing to others.
Sin? What's Sin?
Indeed, we quit calling it sin. As a matter of fact, we call it anything BUT SIN: We call it addiction. We call it being genetically predisposed. All of which leave the person enslaved because the transforming grace of Jesus has, for a long time, been discarded from the modern Church proclaimers. Failing to share the power of grace to deliver a person's life into freedom is not God's will. Yes, God will forgive ALL our sins through faith in Jesus, but he will also transform us.
I am a witness to the God promise and fact that Jesus has the power, and gives it to you and me, to break us free from the chains with which sin manacles us. I have seen numerous people with all the malady's mentioned in this blog ... all the sins mentioned above ... that have been enslaved and victimized by sin. And I have seen people completely forgiven, set free, experience a breakthrough, delivered and made into entirely new creations. This is the part of the good news of the gospel that is rarely proclaimed anymore; but, Jesus makes it clear in John 8:34, after talking about sin's enslaving power, and in speaking of Himself, Jesus reports, "If the Son, therefore, shall set you free, you shall be free indeed!" (John 8: 36)
Additionally, the Apostle Paul proclaims this same victorious witness: "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free! Stand firm then, and do NOT let yourself be burdened by a yoke of slavery! (Galatians 5:1) It really is true that "God made Him (Jesus) who knew no sin to become sin for us that we might become the righteousness of Christ." (2 Corinthians 5:21.) Again, listen to Paul's proclamation, "If ANYONE is IN Christ, he is a NEW Creation. All of the old things are gone. The New HAS come!" Jesus is the Bondage breaker or the chain breaker! He has broken all my chains, and He can do the same for you.
Let Jesus Break Your Chains?
So, why not be set free? Why not turn from your sins heavy chains that are dragging you into bondage to both sin and death. Why not "kneel at the feet of Jesus" by faith, one day at a time, commit your brokenness your sin to Jesus who is the Christ. Ask Him to forgive your sin. Ask Him to cleanse you from all your unrighteousness. Cry out to him to deliver you from the insidious slavery that robs you of eternal life. Keep turning the sin over, as you turn away from it toward Jesus by faith. P-U-S-H ! (Pray Until Something Happens: Let Him do the rest. Let Him break your chains one link at a time.
