Spiritual Practices For Living According To God's Will
Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what God's will is:
Do not get drunk on wine which leads to unbridled immorality,
but be filled with the Spirit ...
You do this by speaking to yourselves/one another with
Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs,
As you intentionally sing and make melody in your hearts,
and you sing to the Lord.
Then you should habitually and or always give thanks to God
who is the Father of everything,
And you should do these things,
IN THE NAME of our
LORD JESUS,
who IS the Christ.
Ephesians 5:17- 21
Paraphrased
I have heard it said, "Practice makes perfect," and here in our scripture lesson, we have God's clear leadership on how important it is to practice God's will by being filled with God's own Holy Spirit. Yes! God does want you and me to be filled with His own Holy Spirit! First God tells us to not be foolish. He then tells us it's His will for us to be sober because insobriety leads us to immorality. Next He tells us to "be filled with the Holy Spirit," and God tells us how to receive this full filled and fulfilling state of being.
To be filled with the Holy Spirit we are to "Be" so that we can experience:
- Be one who speaks, and who speaks to ourselves and one another about the Psalms, about Hymns and Spiritual Songs. Give it a try. Simply reflect out loud to a brother or sister about a Psalm and what it means. Think about and speak about those old Hymns and other spiritual songs. Share together in these things and meditate on them when you are alone.
- Be a singer, and you don't have to sing well.
- Be one who sings as if there is a melody in your heart. Give yourself permission to celebrate with joy.
- Be one who does NOT do it to be seen by other people, but be this way as if you are singing to an audience of ONE: The Audience is none other than The Lord.
- Be one who practises thanking God for everything, and I would say even the smallest things. Develop and attitude of gratitude.
- Then do all of this In The Name of Jesus who is God's anointed one ... God's Messiah.
If we practice these practises we will "Be filled With The Spirit." It's God's way and it is God's will.
