You Called God a What?

1 John 5:10-13New International Version (NIV)
10 Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.
                                            1 John 5:10-13

4 times in this passage a word pops out.  The word is "Whoever."  Whoever believes in God's Son accepts a testimony that John is sharing with everyone.  Whoever does NOT believe    this testimony calls God a liar.  Say what?  You called God what?  This is pretty strong stuff.  Believe God, and you accept His testimony.  Don't believe and you call God a name that I will not repeat.  So there are two "Whoevers" with opposite meanings One demonstrates a trust for God, but the other ... well you know.

What about the other 2 "Whoevers?"  I am glad you asked: The first one is related to the other first "Whoever."  If you "have the Son, you have life." The second "Whoever' is related to its counter part "Whoever" who calls God a liar. "Whoever" does not believe the testimony does NOT have life.

You may say, "So What?" John would answer you that he is trying to get people to the most important guarantee of their life time; therefore, after comparing and contrasting the "Whoevers," he brings it all down to God's guarantee policy for life.  He says, I have written all this so that you  will "believe in the Son of God," and I have written all this so you can know for sure that you have eternal life... share in God's life forever.

So many people don't know they have eternal life.  They hope so, and they "maybe so," but they do not definitely know for sure they have eternal life.  John wants to put those doubts to an end. He wants you and me to know for sure we indeed do have eternal life as a result of holding on tight, in faith, to Jesus the Son of God.
