Can God Really "Bless America? or You?"
As I see all the craziness going on in our culture, and as I have gotten older, I wonder as I write, "Can God REALLY Bless America?" If reaping what you sow or "Karma" mean anything, I have my doubts: Let me explain. When our country first began, we heard words like, "We are endowed by our Creator..." Or we think about how our first President, after being sworn in, walked to St. Paul's Church and helped lead a prayer meeting (of all things) where others and he prayed for an hour or more that God would indeed bless the fledgling nation he was about to lead. This is a far cry from our present day situation where, in our last election, one of our political parties had to fight over whether or not to even use the word "God" in their platforms "planks." I don't think God will bless that in which God's very existence is placed in question by our leaders. But don't stop reading yet. There just might be hope.
Fifty-six of the framers of The Constitution of The United States of America were active members of their churches, and they could even quote the Bible chapter and verse. Until 1962 prayer and Bible reading were a daily part of the American School System because the philosophy that guided this was "freedom OF religion" not freedom from religion, as it is today. Thomas Jefferson talked about the "wall of separation" as a means of protecting religious liberty, but now it is used to put spiritual people in their corners so as to mute their influence. Sarcastically we certainly don't to pollute the minds of children by having the Bible read in school. We certainly don't want them to be influenced by prayer. I don't think God will bless these transitions. But then again... maybe there is still hope.
Take the 10 liberating limits that were foundational for establishing our nation, which are clearly written on the Supreme Court's architecture. Except for historical revisionist, those who really know our history know that these 10 were used to guide the beginnings of our legal system. Now they are thought of by many as libelous rather than liberty providing and are not even considered 10 suggestions...much less 10 laws for governing individual and collective morality.
God provided this 10 piece code to make us healthy. Billy Graham tells us that this is true because "healthy" and "holy" come from the same word in the Hebrew language. I think he is right. Wouldn't we be more healthy if stealing did not occur? What about murder? Is it healthy to NOT murder? Historically and culturally our society has validated the health of God's Holy Law. We really do reap what we sow. Ask an alcoholic. Ask a drug addict. Ask anyone who has sown their lives "to the flesh." Human sexuality God called "good" at the very beginning. But when it becomes Human sexual immorality, we get broken families, ST D's, abuse and even sometimes death. Don't think God blesses that which is unhealthy/ unholy. But don't give up on us yet.
Take the example of how greed is pervasive throughout our government and society. We now owe our children and grand children a debt of 17,000,000,000,000 + (Trillion with a "T") that we have no way of paying (not to mention 80,000,000,000,000 (Trillion with a "T") of unfunded liabilities. On the 17 T, our children and grandchildren each owe $53,000... even the little babies. Multiply that by 4 regarding the unfunded liabilities. When folks are confronted by those of us who care about this worship of Mammon destroying our nation, we are called right wing bigots who don't care. REALLY? So we break the commandment that says "Don't Steal!" And what makes it worse is we are stealing from our children and our grandchildren, with no semblance of remorse. It's no wonder the U.S. credit rating is lowered and bankruptcy cannot be far away. I really don't think God is going to bless this. If you personally spent more than you earned, would you think that would be blessed? Would you think that, for you, it would work out well? Or would it leave you personally bankrupt? But don't give ups on us yet.
Since 1962, the influence of healthy/holy living has been muted by the voices of secularism spewing their religion's immoral code of ethics. What use to be called right is wrong and what was called wrong is called right. Right after it became legal to abort a child, I actually saw one of those up close and personal. The haunting image of that mutilated body was as bad as any wounds I have observed on our military personnel and it still haunts me. The young women who came for comfort after they began experiencing post abortion disorder told me, more than once, that they wish they had more information before making such a decision. My heart went out to them, and still does go out to them. What is worse is that even at the 9th month of pregnancy, a baby can legally be breached (feet first), turned face down (while the child's head is still in the birth canal), and then scissors snip the spinal column at the base of the brain. This effectively kills the child. It happens thousands of times a month, and yet there is not an outcry. I REALLY don't think God can bless this.
So, we are a nation that seems to be worshipping the creature more than the Creator. We live by our own moral codes, even if they clash with that which has proven to be healthy. We steal from our children and our grand children. We have horrifically taken the lives of millions of our babies in the womb or just exiting it. We put God on the back burner, and we do all that which seems insane. Bad things start happening and we have the audacity to blame God???? We spit on that which is holy and we then sing "God Bless America."
Don't get me wrong. I really do believe God wants to bless America. I REALLY do! Yet there are principles set in motion long before those of us reading this blog were born, principles predicated upon healthy/holy guidance that will generate healthy/holy living. Principles that have demonstrated a great way to live in the good ole USA. We have turned away from that which has worked so very well... at least for the most part. Karma is real. That is reaping what we sow is real. God will NOT grow oranges from apple seeds. He will not grow apples from orange seeds. Tomatoes don't grow water melon vines, and coffee beans will not produce one bit of tea. If we plant the right thing during the right season and cultivate what we have sown, a beautiful harvest is grown, per God's will and design.
But it is clear God cannot bless that which will curse. He cannot cultivate that which rotten. He can not grow a beautiful harvest from that which contradicts God's design for blessing a people.
So why not change course. Folks it "ain't" working. It really "ain't!" So why not change what we are doing. Let's take a page out of 2 Chronicles 7:14 which tells is, "If my people- who are called by my name- will humble themselves, pray, seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear them from heaven, I will forgive all their sins and I will heal there land."
Yup! If we seriously turn around, God just might bless America!
