Ways To Build A Holy Conscience In Your Child And You
Number One
Building a Healthy/Holy Conscience in a child, and in yourself for that matter, is one of the most (if not the single most) challenging parental attempted achievements of your life... especially given the current state of our culture. Closely related to this challenge, is the fact that Holy/Healthy Conscience building is extremely important. Why? Because doing so prepares a child to live and truly live. It also prepares them to journey through "The Valley of The Shadow of Death" in a spiritual way that gives them strength not possessed by others who do not possess spiritual strength.
Keep in mind, it is best to teach what you teach to yourself, and it is best to model what is described by you as important. Just saying your teaching is important doesn't demonstrate what is really important. In other words, if you leave this highly spiritual endeavor to an institution like The Church, but you don't journey to exemplify the daily importance of spirituality, then your child will see right through it, and when they get the chance, they might just take another path.
Some adult children have even determined --consciously or unconsciously-- to become primarily natural minded persons who are spirituality avoidant or even rebellious to whatever they were taught about spirituality. They seem to hate the very thought of public worship, and seem determined to ensure they don't "force religion" on their children; therefore, don't just say something is important... demonstrate its importance. If they see it is important to you, they will believe it is important for them. I will say more about this toward the conclusion of this 10 step blog.
Now to Step One.
From the time a child is born they absorb knowledge like a sponge. Producing 250,000 brain cells per day, at that stage of life, they are ripe for believing and they are ripe for learning. That which becomes important and their "normal" begins to become fixed and internalized in the seat of their being... the soul.
In a very quick passage of time, they begin to learn their "numbers" and the alphabet or "A, B, Cs." Indeed parents are starting at a much earlier age teaching their children these vital building blocks to successful living. While you are teaching these things, with songs, melodies and rhyme... do the same with the books of the Bible and God's 10 commands. There are only 66 book titles inside of the Bible and their are only 10 commands. Make it fun for them to learn, and the will truly get it, from the inside out.
Here is a challenge: If you have not already memorized them yourselves, see if your child can learn them faster than you. It's almost a given that you will not "be smarter than a fifth grader" nor a much younger child, when it comes to committing these to memory. I refer you to the afore mentioned sponge like brain of a young child :o)
There is a miracle that will begin to occur in the life of the child. They will value the one true God. They will be less likely, as they grow, to fall prey to being a person who lies or steals. They will appreciate the value of the sanctity of human life... they will be developing a Holy Healthy Conscience. They will become fair minded. The importance of the Holy Book that guided our culture until the 1960s will begin to guide the child's life. Jesus will (to use a term we taught our children) "be their best friend" who is there for them... something I hope your teach them from the get go.
Two important thoughts to keep in mind are the foundational commands upon which the top 10 commands are based: "Love the LORD your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and the second is like unto it: Love your neighbor as yourself." Jesus commentary on this is important as you teach. He said "On these are based all the laws and the prophets."
*NOTE: I learned something that helped me with this. It is what I call the parents promise, which is located in Deuterononmy 30:6. "The LORD your God, will transform your heart, and the heart of your decendants so that you will love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul so that you can LIVE."
Yup! "Its a God thang honey." Della Reese. The Bible, when taught appropriately, and all the commandments of God are conscience building. Indeed, they are God given to help your child and you to live, and they are made possible as an inside job from our Creator who will give us the power to be morally correct (juxtaposed to politically correct), and God will do so because of a thing called love that God will put in each of our hearts... if we let Him.
SO WHY NOT LET HIM?
THEN..
BE BLESSED 2DAY
ESPECIALLY 2DAY
